Now we are living at a time when the global warming and the man-oriented development have increasingly decreased the habitats of animals and plants, increased the number of endangered species and reduced the diversity of species. In order to resolve this problem, the Korean Society of Environment & Ecology (KSEE) was founded in 1987. And the KSEE is designed to promote a sustainable development and make a contribution to improving the global and the national land environment by providing and applying the results of research and study on the ecosystem restoration, the environment education and the ecosystem management & conservation.
The KSEE conducts various researches and studies and offers the policy proposal for improving the urban ecosystem and the natural ecosystem including Baekdudaegan and the national parks. In order to carry out the above tasks in a systematic and proper manner, the KSEE is composed of three commissions: National Parks Commission (NPC), Urban Ecology Commission (UEC) and Korea Wild Life Commission (KWLC). The three commissions enable the active interchange of members and the joint research and study. Especially, the NPC has consistently carried out joint study on the national parks and published the results of the study in the ¡®Special Edition of National Park¡¯ since 1987. The KSEE has accumulated the valuable data on the national parks in a systematic manner for the past 20 years.
As of 2007 marking the 29th anniversary, the KSEE has 780 individual members and 40 institutional members and all members are actively involved in the research. The KSEE issues its journal officially registered with Korea Research Foundation six times on a yearly basis. Also, it publishes "Landscape and Ecological Engineering (LEE)" jointly with the relevant local and foreign societies, making efforts to register LEE in Science Citation Index (SCI).
The KSEE covers various areas related to the environmental ecosystem. And it makes research efforts among different scholarly areas with members from a variety of sectors like Biology, Ecology, Forest Resources, Landscape Architecture, Land & Urban Planning, and Environment attending. The KSEE analyzes the ecosystem from the integrated perspective through the cooperated research efforts and makes great efforts for conservation of the land environment and improvement of the global environment. In addition, the KSEE plans to operate the Environmental Ecosystem Academy (tentatively named) which involves special education programs not only for students but also experts.
(The KSEE always opens it doors to anyone who wants to leave a sustainable land to the future generation. The KSEE will listen to the voices of the public, NGO groups, institution and the other academic community related to Environment and Ecosystem. And the KSEE will dedicate itself to environmentally sustainable and sound land where human being and nature can coexist in harmony.
